Shimane stretches from east to west, with the Sea of Japan stretching to the north and Chugoku to the south. It is the 19th largest prefecture in terms of area, but its population is the second smallest after Tottori, with a population of approximately 640,000 as of October 2024. The majority of the prefecture's population, approximately 370,000 people, live in Matsue City, the prefectural capital, and Izumo City, the second most populous city. There are five golf courses in Matsue City and Izumo City, and two in Hamada City, the third most populous city in the prefecture.

It is convenient to access by car from Izumo Airport or Iwami Airport.

Shimane has three airports: Izumo Airport (Izumo Enmusubi Airport), Iwami Airport (Hagi-Iwami Airport), and Oki Airport (Oki World Geopark Airport). Izumo Airport is convenient if you're going to golf courses in Matsue City and Izumo City, and Iwami Airport is convenient if you're going to golf courses in Hamada City. Izumo Airport can be accessed from Tokyo (Haneda), Shizuoka, Nagoya (Komaki), Nagoya (Chubu), Osaka (Itami), and Fukuoka. Iwami Airport can be accessed from Tokyo (Haneda). From the airport, it's easy to get there by rental car or taxi.
