Hokkaido and Tohoku are home to many golf courses with dynamic layouts set on majestic grounds. Hokkaido in particular accounts for roughly one-fifth of Japan's land area, and most of the golf courses are designed to be spacious and relaxed. Golf courses in Hokkaido generally operate on a two-day system, with morning and afternoon through courses, to allow golfers arriving by plane to play efficiently. For example, if you take the first morning flight from Tokyo's Haneda airport to Hokkaido, you can play one afternoon through course on the day of your arrival and one morning through course the following day, allowing you to enjoy two rounds of golf in two days and one night.
Hokkaido is by far the most convenient to access by plane. New Chitose Airport, which has the most flights to and from Hakodate Airport, Asahikawa Airport, Tokachi Obihiro Airport, Tancho Kushiro Airport, etc., is generally accessible by rental car or Shuttle bus to the golf course. Tohoku also has airports in each prefecture, but the number of flights is limited. Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, and Aomori are also accessible by the Tohoku Shinkansen, Yamagata by the Yamagata Shinkansen, and Akita by the Akita Shinkansen.
The main area for golf Hokkaido is around New Chitose Airport. Tarumae Country Club is located in Tomakomai City, where the airport is located, and can be reached in about 30 minutes. It is a prestigious course designed by master golfer Osamu Ueda, which hosted the Japan Women's Open in 2007. The main area for golf in Tohoku is around Sendai City Miyagi, the largest city. Hananomori Golf Club is a course that hosts men's and women's tournaments and can be reached within an hour from Sendai City. It features a strategically designed course by Jack Nicklaus.
