As the name implies (with "yama" meaning mountain), Yamagata Prefecture is a land of many mountains, with mountainous areas accounting for 72% of its total landmass. Among these mountains lie eight basins, and along the Sea of Japan sits the Shonai Plain, the prefecture's largest flatland. The majority of Yamagata's approximately 1.01 million residents live in the Shonai Plain and these eight basins. Since golf courses are developed in these populated areas, the courses themselves are flat. However, they are surrounded by six towering peaks listed among the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains—Mount Zao, Mount Chokai, Mount Gassan, Mount Azuma, Mount Asahi, and Mount Iide—offering players a truly dynamic landscape to enjoy.
Yamagata Prefecture has two airports. Yamagata Airport, located in the inland region, provides access from Tokyo (Haneda), Osaka (Itami), Nagoya (Komaki), and Sapporo (New Chitose), while Shonai Airport on the coast serves the Tokyo (Haneda) route. The inland cities of Yamagata and Shinjo can also be reached via the Yamagata Shinkansen, with a travel time of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes from Tokyo Station. For those traveling by car, there are two main routes: taking the Tohoku-Chuo Expressway from the Fukushima Junction on the Tohoku Expressway, or taking the Yamagata Expressway from the Murata Junction in Miyagi Prefecture.
In Yamagata Prefecture, the population is distributed across various regions, with Yamagata City being the most populous, followed by Tsuruga City as the second largest. Golf courses are also scattered throughout these different areas. Yamagata Minami Country Club, situated at the southernmost tip of the prefecture, boasts high popularity—primarily among local golfers—due to its excellent access from Yonezawa City. The nearest exits are the Yonezawa-Kita Interchange or the Nanyo-Takahata Interchange on the Tohoku-Chuo Expressway.
