Hokkaido is the largest in area among the 47 prefectures of Japan, so almost all golf courses are spaciously laid out in a vast area. And because it is the most northerly, it is by far cooler than Honshu. Spaciousness and coolness are the two major advantages of Hokkaido golf. The best season arrives after Golden Week every year, and many golfers from outside the province come to play in June and July, when the rainy season is less severe, and in July through September, when it is cooler even in summer.
The standard way to get to a golf course in Hokkaido is by plane. You fly into the nearest airport and then head to the golf course by shuttle bus or rental car. Many golf courses are concentrated around New Chitose Airport, the busiest airport, but there are also attractive golf courses around Hakodate Airport, the second busiest airport, and Asahikawa Airport, the third busiest airport.
Located about 50 minutes from Hakodate Airport and about 20 minutes from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station on Hokkaido Shinkansen Onuma Lake Golf Club is one of the most popular courses in the Hakodate area. It consists of 27 holes across three courses: Onuma Course, Konuma Course, and Komagatake Course. Each course has a layout that is typical of Hokkaido, incorporating natural ponds, streams, and birch trees. You can drive a cart onto the fairways throughout the season, allowing you to enjoy a comfortable and speedy round with a resort atmosphere.
