Geographically, Shimane stretches long from east to west, sandwiched between the Sea of Japan and the Chugoku Mountains. Despite its relatively large land area (19th in Japan), it is sparsely populated with only about 640,000 people. Most residents are concentrated in the urban centers of Matsue and Izumo, where you can find five of the region's golf courses. Additionally, there are two courses in Hamada, the prefecture's third-largest city, showcasing a select layout of courses near the main population hubs.
Shimane Prefecture is served by three airports: Izumo Airport (Izumo Enmusubi Airport), Iwami Airport (Hagi-Iwami Airport), and Oki Airport (Oki Islands Global Geopark Airport). For golf courses in Matsue and Izumo, Izumo Airport is the most convenient choice, while Iwami Airport is best for those in Hamada. Izumo Airport offers flights from Tokyo (Haneda), Shizuoka, Nagoya (Komaki and Chubu), Osaka (Itami), and Fukuoka. Iwami Airport is accessible via direct flights from Tokyo (Haneda). From either airport, renting a car or taking a taxi is the smoothest way to reach the golf courses.
Izumo Taisha Country Club is a highly popular course located near Izumo Airport. It boasts excellent access, situated just 7 km from the Izumo Interchange on the San-in Expressway. The 18-hole course fascinates golfers with its beautiful layout, where each hole is elegantly separated by black pine forests and shimmering ponds.
