Hokkaido and the Tohoku region are home to numerous golf courses characterized by dynamic layouts integrated into majestic natural surroundings. Hokkaido, in particular, accounts for approximately one-fifth of Japan’s total land area, allowing most of its courses to be designed with a generous and unhurried sense of space. To provide a seamless experience for those visiting by air, golf courses in Hokkaido typically operate on a two-session system, offering both morning and afternoon "through-play" (18 holes without a lunch break). For example, by taking the earliest flight from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, you can enjoy a round in the afternoon of your arrival and another the following morning. This allows for a fulfilling "two-round, two-day" golf trip even on a short overnight stay.
For Hokkaido, flying is by far the most convenient option. Most travelers arrive at New Chitose Airport, which offers the highest number of flights, or other regional hubs like Hakodate, Asahikawa, Tokachi-Obihiro, and Kushiro. From there, it is common to head to the golf courses via rental car or shuttle bus. While the Tohoku region also has airports in each prefecture, flight schedules can be limited. Instead, the Shinkansen provides excellent access: the Tohoku Shinkansen serves Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, and Aomori, while the Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen lines offer direct connections to their respective prefectures.
The primary hub for golf in Hokkaido is the area surrounding New Chitose Airport. Tarumae Country Club is located in Tomakomai City—the same city as the airport—and is easily accessible in just 30 minutes. Designed by the master architect Osamu Ueda, this prestigious course hosted the Japan Women's Open in 2007. In the Tohoku region, the main golfing hub centers around Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture’s largest city. Hananomori Golf Club, located within an hour's drive of central Sendai, is a distinguished tournament venue for both men and women. The course is renowned for its highly strategic design, crafted by the legendary Jack Nicklaus.
