As Hokkaido is the largest of Japan's 47 prefectures, almost all of its golf courses are laid out expansively on vast stretches of land. Furthermore, because it is the northernmost prefecture, it is overwhelmingly cooler than Honshu. This combination of spaciousness and coolness represents the two major benefits of Hokkaido golf. The best season arrives every year after the Golden Week holidays in May. Many golfers from outside the prefecture visit during June and July, as there is little impact from the rainy season, and from July through September, when they can play comfortably even in the height of summer.
When visiting golf courses in Hokkaido, arriving by plane is the standard style. After landing at the nearest airport, golfers typically head to the courses via club shuttle buses or rental cars. While a large number of golf courses are concentrated around New Chitose Airport, which has the highest passenger volume, there are also many attractive courses located near Hakodate Airport and Asahikawa Airport, the second and third busiest airports in the region, respectively.
Located approximately 50 minutes from Hakodate Airport and 20 minutes from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station on the Hokkaido Shinkansen, Onuma Lake Golf Club is one of the most popular courses in the Hakodate area. It consists of 27 holes across three courses—Onuma, Konuma, and Komagatake—all featuring a characteristically Hokkaido layout that incorporates natural ponds, streams, and scenic white birch trees. Since carts are permitted on the fairways throughout the season, golfers can enjoy a comfortable and speedy round filled with a true resort atmosphere.
