Nara Prefecture is divided into the southern mountainous region (Yoshino Mountains) and the northern lowlands by the Yoshino River, which flows east to west through the center of the prefecture. Since the majority of the approximately 1.3 million residents live in the north, most of the 30-plus golf courses in the prefecture are located near these densely populated northern areas. Many people live along the Kintetsu Kyoto and Kashihara Lines, including Nara City—the prefectural capital with a population of about 350,000. Consequently, golf courses are concentrated in the hilly and plateau regions spreading to the east of these residential areas.
Many golf courses are clustered around the interchanges of the Meihan National Highway, which connects Tenri City in Nara and Kameyama City in Mie. This allows for smooth access from the Osaka area via the Nishi-Meihan Expressway and from the Kyoto area via the Keinawa Expressway.
Some courses also offer convenient access by train.
Certain golf courses operate shuttle buses to and from JR Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Station. These services are highly valued by golfers traveling by train from the Osaka and Kyoto areas.
When visiting golf courses in Nara Prefecture, using the central hub of Nara City as your base ensures a smooth trip. Nara Meihan Golf Club is highly popular due to its great accessibility, located just 4 km from the Hari Interchange on the Meihan National Highway. Designed by Peter Thomson, its 27 strategic holes are sure to spark any golfer’s competitive spirit. On the other hand, Yamato Kogen Country Club welcomes beginners with its relaxed layout, featuring fairways roughly twice the width of a standard course.
