Over 80% of Wakayama Prefecture is covered by mountainous terrain, centered around the Kii Mountains with elevations of approximately 1,000 m. Consequently, it has the smallest population in the Kinki region, with about 880,000 residents as of October 2024. Of these, approximately 360,000 live in Wakayama City, which borders Osaka Prefecture. The prefecture is broadly divided into three regions: Kihoku (centered around Wakayama City), Kichu (including Arida and Gobo), and Kinan (including Tanabe and Shingu). There are about 20 golf courses in the prefecture, primarily concentrated in the Kihoku region where the population is highest.
For golfers living in the Kansai region, traveling by car is the most convenient way to reach Wakayama’s golf courses. You can take the Hanwa Expressway from Osaka, or the Keinawa Expressway from Kyoto and Nara. For those visiting from outside the Kansai area, flying is a great option. In addition to Nanki-Shirahama Airport (Kumano-Shirahama Resort Airport) within the prefecture, Kansai International Airport (KIX) offers excellent accessibility. While Nanki-Shirahama Airport provides direct flights from Tokyo (Haneda), Kansai International Airport makes it easy to visit from many other regions.
While many golf courses in Wakayama are known for their significant elevation changes that follow the natural terrain, Sun Resort Country Club stands out. Despite being built in an inland hilly area, most of its holes are remarkably flat. The course is highly popular for its strategic layout, featuring expertly placed ponds and bunkers. Another major draw is its excellent accessibility from the Osaka area, located within 15 km of the Kainan-higashi Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway.
