Kyoto Prefecture is long from north to south, bordering the Sea of Japan to the north and Nara Prefecture to the south. The prefecture is divided into five regions from north to south: the Tango region (including Miyazu City), the Chutan region (Fukuchiyama, Maizuru, and Ayabe Cities), the Nantan region (Kameoka and Nantan Cities, and Kyotamba Town in Funai District), Kyoto City, and the Yamashiro region (including Uji City). Despite the fact that approximately 1.43 million of the prefecture's 2.5 million residents live in Kyoto City, the number of golf courses within Kyoto City is small compared to other prefectures, and more than half of the 30-plus golf courses are concentrated in the Yamashiro region.
Access to golf courses in Kyoto Prefecture is basically most convenient by car. Courses in the Yamashiro region, heading south from Kyoto City, are accessed via the Kei-Nawa Expressway and Meihan National Highway, while courses in the Nantan region, heading north from Kyoto City, are accessed via the Kyoto Jukan Expressway. Among the golf courses in the Yamashiro region, some facilities operate club shuttle buses departing from and arriving at JR Nara Station and Kintetsu Nara Station. By taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto Station, you can enjoy a golf trip using Kyoto City as your base.
Since many Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines have been built in Kyoto City since ancient times, there was no suitable land for developing golf courses. Consequently, large-scale golf resorts were developed in the Yamashiro and Nantan regions instead. In the Yamashiro region, Lake Forest Resort Bird Spring Course (27 holes) and Lake Forest Resort The Century Course (18 holes) boast an overwhelming capacity. Grandvere Kyoto Golf Club in the Nantan region also features 36 holes and welcomes many golfers.
