This is partly because the number of remote islands is the third largest in Japan, and the area of remote islands accounts for about 27% of the total area. About 1.53 million people live on its vast lands. There are more than 20 golf courses, mainly in areas easily accessible from Kagoshima City, the prefectural capital, where about 590,000 people live. There are many volcanoes, so there are few plains, and most golf courses are hilly courses that take advantage of the natural topography.

Kagoshima has one airport managed by the government (Kagoshima Airport) and seven airports managed by the prefecture (Tanegashima Airport, Yakushima Airport, Amami Airport, Tokunoshima Airport, Okinoerabu Airport, Kikai Airport, and Yoron Airport). There are golf courses on remote islands, but basically you can access the golf course by car from Kagoshima Airport. You can also take the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima from Fukuoka and Kumamoto and drive from the nearest station. The stops are Izumi Station, Kawauchi Station, and Kagoshima Chuo Station.
